Areas of Concentration and Fields of Research

PPGPATO is organized into two major Areas of Concentration, which serve as the pillars for all academic investigations and thesis/dissertation development.

Area 1: Oncology

This field focuses on the study of neoplasms, exploring their biological behavior, morphological characteristics, and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

  • Field of Research: Morphological and Molecular Alterations in CancerFocus: Investigating the cellular and genetic changes that drive tumor development. This includes the study of biomarkers for early diagnosis, prognosis, and the identification of new molecular targets for personalized medicine.
  • Field of Research: Experimental and Clinical OncologyFocus: Bridging the gap between laboratory findings and clinical practice. This line encompasses the study of tumor progression, responses to treatment, and the development of experimental models to test new oncological therapies.

Area 2: Infectious and Parasitic Diseases

This field is dedicated to understanding the complex interactions between pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites) and their hosts, with a strong emphasis on diseases prevalent in tropical regions.

  • Field of Research: Pathogenesis and Immune Response in Infectious Diseases – Focus: Analyzing the mechanisms by which pathogens cause disease and how the human immune system responds to these threats. Research highlights include inflammation processes, tissue damage, and immune evasion strategies.
  • Field of Research: Diagnostics, Therapeutics, and Epidemiology of Infectious Agents Focus: Developing and refining diagnostic tools, evaluating the efficacy of antimicrobial and antiparasitic treatments, and studying the distribution and transmission patterns of infectious diseases to improve public health outcomes.
