Our History
About the Graduate Program in Pathology (PPGPATO)
The Graduate Program in Pathology at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) is a center of academic excellence dedicated to advanced research and high-level professional training. Established in 1991 and officially launched in 1992, the program has undergone a journey of significant growth and institutional consolidation.
History and Academic Evolution
While the program faced performance challenges in the mid-2000s, attaining a CAPES Score of 3 out of 7 during the 2004–2006 evaluation, a decisive recovery project was launched in 2007. This initiative, a joint effort between the Program Board and UFC’s Senior Administration, was closely monitored by CAPES coordinators.
The results were transformative:
- 2010–2012: The program attained a CAPES Score of 4, reflecting a substantial increase in the quality of intellectual production and dissertations.
- 2013–2017: An Interinstitutional Doctoral Program (DINTER) in Tropical Medicine was established in partnership with FIOCRUZ-IOC, resulting in the award of ten doctoral degrees in 2017.
- 2019–Present: Based on the success of DINTER, our independent Doctoral Program in Pathology was officially approved by CAPES in November 2019. This expansion has consolidated PPGPATO as a complete center for graduate education.
Research Excellence and Institutional Support
Our program is characterized by a mature and scientifically productive faculty. Recent CAPES evaluations have highlighted our professors’ ability to secure research funding and maintain a consistent output of high-impact scientific literature.
Key institutional achievements include:
- Funding and Scholarships: Regular selection for Visiting Professor positions and consistent scholarship support through CAPES, FUNCAP and CNPq.
- Strategic Partnerships: Continuous engagement with CAPES through Mid-Term Seminars and National Graduate Meetings in the Medicine II area to ensure alignment with the highest national standards.
Internationalization and Global Reach
PPGPATO is committed to global academic integration. Through the 2023 FUNCAP
Internationalization Plan and CAPES (Split-Site Doctoral Program Abroad – PDSE), we have expanded our reach significantly:
- Split-Site Doctoral Programs: In 2024, our first doctoral students began research internships at prestigious institutions in Italy, Portugal, and Japan.
- Global Impact: Our first doctoral thesis defense, completed by Deborah Nunes in 2024, featured six publications in international journals, setting a high standard for our future graduates.
